Thoughts on Morandi
Here is another view from the exhibition Studio Practice at Koscielak Gallery. I included many sketch books for people to thumb through. My sketch books are completely unedited and include writings and drawings of whatever runs through my mind at the moment.
I find Morandi's late still life paintings powerful and moving in their apparent simplicity. The humble objects frontally viewed and clumped together lead me into a state of wonder...what is the reality he depicts? Is it the artist's hand moving the paint across the tiny surface of the canvas, making subtle changes that destabilize my sense of space and gravity?
